Introduction   In an international industry in which no single company truly dominates, personalities are distinct and outstanding achievements are legion. And inevitably, in the life-and-death business of pharmaceuticals, the regulators play their part.

Most of today’s pharmaceutical companies are huge conglomerates. In some cases, they are the result of previously unthinkable mergers of once-bitter competitors. In other cases, they are enormous collections of companies with interests ranging from prescription drugs to agrochemicals to personal care products. Surprisingly, though, none of the companies commands even 10% of the global pharmaceuticals market, according to the financial network CNNfn. Perhaps moresurprising, each company retains a distinct personality—with all the accomplishments and foibles that the word implies. The same is true of the prominent regulatory agencies and funding organizations, which directed and nurtured the growth of the companies and, thus, helped to shape the Pharmaceutical Century.
